mursat 1 FAQ

unser Vorhaben

How do I communicate with mur.sat-1?
tba
Where do I get technical details?
for now, propably in our GIT. more: tba
What kind of software do you work with?
We use only freely availbable and whenever possible free/libre/open source software. E.g. GNU/Linux, scite, kicad, geany, gcc-avr, dfu-programmer, osmosdr, gqrx, gnuradio, etc. (FIXME)
Can I meet you guys?

Of course, just stop by at our regulars' table on Monday night at Traminer Weinstube, our weekly Tech-Meetings on Tuesday night in realraum, one of our infrequent WorkLabs or drop us a line.

How can I help?

We need lot's of help, mostly with organizing stuff, documenting stuff but also with technical issues like image processing on arm microprocessors. Please drop us a line or just stop by :-) In between, share the word, link to us from your blog, twitter about us, and the like.

How do you plan on realizing the camera setup?
We plan on mounting the camera inside the satellite (for protection from the cold) where it will have a view of the 45 degree angle flip-open mirror placed on top of the satellite. The idea is that the satellite itself be partially visible on any pictures we take. What's mursat1's budget ?
Right now our budget is about 30.000 Euro.
What about the recently passed Austrian Space-Law ?

The Austrian parliament recently passed a new law regulating the liability for Austrian satellites which requires proof of insurance against any possible damages for at least (!) 60.000.000 Euros. Obviously having to take out such an insurance would kill our project. Thankfully the law also states that projects already begun are exempt.

How will you get the collected data and pictures back to earth ?

If and when we manage to communicate with MurSat1, we'll try to squeeze as much data as possible and the best images through the narrow 9600bps channel down to earth. Another possibilty would be to safely land the SD-Card by use of an paper airplane. (actually possible ;-)

How does the satellite choose the "best" images ?
In theory by looking at the sun-tracker-data at the time the picture was taken, as well as inspecting the JPEG filesize and possibly by calculating a histogram from the JPEG compression coefficens without actually loading the whole image into memory. All that is however still looking for people willing implement it on an Cortex ARM-M3.
Ist there any good literature on building picosatellites ?

Sandy Antunes is currently writing a series of four short and very introductionary books about building TubeSats on the cheap. You should also read Space System Failures by Harland and Lorenz.
